Colchicine: instructions for use

Colchicine is a substance of alkaloid nature, which significantly reduces the movement of leukocytes to the focus of the inflammatory process. This inhibits the uptake of microcrystalline parts of uric acid by phagocytes.

Colchicine, which affects uric acid metabolism, is produced on a plant basis. The active ingredient of the same name in the remedy is isolated from the great flintless. This herbaceous plant has long been used in folk medicine to reduce joint pain and prevent the progression of inflammation.

The medicine is produced in tablet form. Tablets are mostly white, but sometimes have a slightly yellowish tinge. Round biconvex tablets have a risk, which simplifies compliance with the prescribed dosage.

The drug has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. After taking it, it is possible to quickly stop an acute attack of gout. In addition, the active ingredient delays the deposition of uric acid microcrystals in the tissues.

Colchicine Generic is able to significantly inhibit cell division, stops miosis, stops degranulation processes in neutrophils.

The drug stops the development of amyloidosis and reduces the intensity of formation of amyloid structure fibrils. Colchicine tablets are highly effective in terms of stopping and preventing gout attacks of an acute nature. The therapeutic effect develops during the first day of use (in 75% of patients).

Indications for use

Colchicine is prescribed for:

1. In the treatment of gout. This disease is characterized by acute joint pain on the background of impaired uric acid metabolism and urate deposition in tissues. The remedy is shown to relieve pain at exacerbation of the disease and to slow its progression.

2. Amyloidosis, when a complex protein-polysaccharide compound – amyloid – is deposited in the tissues. This leads to malfunction of almost all systems and organs in the body.

3. Inflammatory diseases in otorhinolaryngology and dentistry.

4. Mediterranean fever, which is a hereditary disease associated with amyloid deposition in tissues. The main symptom is recurrent sudden increase in body temperature and severe chills.

5. Phlebitis. In this case, there is inflammation of the venous wall on the background of pathologies of infectious and inflammatory nature.

6. Scleroderma. The disease is characterized by the appearance of scar tissue on the skin and internal organs.

7. Chondrocalcinosis. When this pathology occurs, calcium pyrophosphate crystals are deposited in the articular cartilage and sac, causing painful sensations.

Treatment is prescribed by a doctor, so Colchicine over the counter is not dispensed. If you do not have time to make an appointment with a doctor, and treatment cannot be interrupted, you can buy Colchicine otc, as the doctor who works for the pharmacy will write a prescription for you.

Foods to avoid when taking Colchicine

A diet low in purines can not only prevent the symptoms of diseases associated with elevated levels of uric acid in the blood but also improve overall health and well-being.

Purines are organic compounds that are part of nucleic acids and other important biologically active substances. In the human body, the end product of purine metabolism is uric acid. Disorders of purine metabolism can lead to increased levels of uric acid in the blood – hyperuricemia.

A diet low in purines can not only prevent the symptoms of diseases associated with elevated levels of uric acid in the blood but also improve overall health and well-being.

Gout patients should avoid excessive intake of alcoholic beverages, especially beer. Moderate consumption of wine is not associated with gout exacerbation. Excessive alcohol consumption leads to more frequent gout relapses, even with allopurinol therapy.

Patients should avoid drinks sweetened with high fructose syrup. It is also important to limit natural sweet fruit juices, table sugar, sugary drinks and desserts, and table salt. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided when treated with Colchicine.

Foods containing high levels of purines include:

  • red meat and game;
  • certain seafood including: tuna, sardines, anchovies, herring, mussels, cod, scallops, trout, and haddock;
  • meat by-products (kidney, liver, heart, etc.)
  • legumes (peas, lentils, etc.).

It is recommended that these foods be significantly limited or avoided:

  1. High-fat foods.
  2. Alcohol. Beer and whiskey are particularly high in purines. Alcohol also causes dehydration, which makes it difficult for the body to eliminate uric acid.
  3. Sweetened beverages: Fructose is an ingredient in many sweetened beverages, including fruit juices and carbonated drinks, and its excessive consumption is accompanied by a risk of developing gout.

Maintaining a high level of hydration by drinking plenty of fluids can be helpful in preventing gout recurrence. Since the association of gout with the development of atherosclerosis is well known, a diet low in cholesterol and fat is advisable.

Meals for gout should be fractional, the number of meals a day – from 4 to 6, portions of small volume. It is strongly not recommended to use salt in gout, if there is no way to abandon it, its quantity should be reduced. The basis of the diet in gout is lean fish and meat, which are cooked in boiled or baked form, vegetables and fruits. It is obligatory to consume dairy products every day.

Weight loss in obese patients can reduce uric acid levels. However, diets that cause ketosis (such as starvation) should be avoided.

How to take Colchicine for acute gout?

There is a regimen for taking to relieve acute pain. To do this, a whole tablet is taken. Then you take another 0.5-1 tablets at an interval of 60-120 minutes. The treatment is continued until the pain syndrome is relieved. The maximum allowable dose is 8 tablets per day.

How to use the drug?

It starts with a single dose, which is 1 mg. Then the drug is taken 0.5 mg every 3 hours until the intensity of painful signs is reduced. The total allowable amount of the drug in 1 course is 6 mg, exceeding the maximum dosage is strictly forbidden. The repeated course of treatment can be carried out not earlier than after 3 days. Reception for the prevention of relapses is 0.5 mg 2 to 3 times a day.

Elderly patients, people with kidney and liver diseases may need to reduce the dose or reduce the frequency of administration of the drug. The duration of the therapeutic course is determined by the doctor depending on the severity and intensity of symptoms, but most often it is short with high doses of the drug and frequent administration.

When to take Colchicine?

It is important to follow the doctor’s recommendations. Most often, the drug is prescribed in the evening.

How long does it take for Colchicine to work?

What is Valtrex used for?

Valtrex is an antiviral medicine that is active in fighting the herpes virus. Your doctor may prescribe Valtrex for the following conditions:

  • Herpetic inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes.

  • In the first manifestations and recurrences of genital herpes in immunocompromised patients.

  • For the treatment and prevention of relapses of ocular herpes in immunocompromised adults.

  • Treatment of labial herpes (labial fever)

  • Valtrex is prescribed as prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus infection after organ's transplantation surgery

Valtrex speeds up the regeneration of affected skin areas, reduces pain, relieves itching and burning. It is also used to prevent relapses and reduce the risk of infection in persons in contact with the patient.

How long does Valtrex stay in your system?

Valtrex medication contains the active ingredient Valacyclovir Hydrochloride. It is active in the body for a short period of time. Most of the medicine will be eliminated within 24 hours.

What does Valtrex treat?

Valtrex cannot completely cure the disease, the drug helps with the unpleasant symptoms that have resulted from the disease. It eliminates small blisters, itching, burning, and redness. Valtrex 500 mg also activates the regeneration processes.

How to take Valtrex?

The treatment regimen for herpes infection, the doctor prescribes depending on the symptoms, the severity of the course, immune status, and chronic diseases.

An example of a standard treatment regimen:

Primary episode

500 mg 2 times a day for 5-10 days

Relapse

500 mg 2 times a day 3-5 days

Suppressor therapy

500 mg once in the morning, 6-12 months

Take Valacyclovir orally, regardless of meals, as directed by your doctor. If you have frequent herpes recurrences (more than 5 times a year), your doctor may prescribe suppressive therapy. It means prolonged use of antiviral medications to immediately block the virus from multiplying as soon as it leaves the nerve ganglion. Suppressive therapy is aimed at reducing the number of relapses. In suppressive therapy, the antiviral medication is taken in the appropriate dosage for 6-12 months.

What are the side effects of Valtrex?

During treatment with Valtrex, various adverse reactions may occur, such as

  • Allergies;
  • Headache;
  • Blood disorders: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia;
  • Nausea, sometimes vomiting;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Weight gain;

Valtrex and alcohol

It is not advisable to combine Valtrex 500 tablets for herpes with alcohol because it has a negative effect on the liver and suppresses the nerve cells and respiratory center. This increases the toxicity of the antiviral drug and may lead to encephalopathy, decreased intelligence, headache, gait disturbance, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Allergic reactions may increase, so you should avoid alcohol while taking Valtrex.

Valtrex vs. Acyclovir

Valacyclovir differs from Acyclovir in that the amino acid Valine has been added to it. And although Valacyclovir is converted to Valine and the same Acyclovir in the body, its bioavailability is significantly higher: 54%.
